Doñana and Extremadura birding holidays

We have chosen Doñana and Extremadura as the best sites for your birding holidays in Spain. Indeed, we are visiting some of the best birding spots in Spain. Simply, two classical destinations for birders on the best time of the year.

Day 1: Seville airport -Southern Doñana

Meet and welcome in Seville airport. Dinner and accomodation in El Rocío or Villamanrique (Doñana).

Day 2: Doñana

A day to spend birding near El Rocío, considered the heart of Doñana. We can expect high numbers of wintering waterfowl, besides spanish specialities. Accomodation in El Rocío or Villamanrique.

Day 3: Doñana

Today we will be birding other territories within Doñana, which will bring us closer to amazing birds such as Marbled teal, Black Stork, Glossy Ibis... There will also be very good chances to enjoy raptor photography today as we move on the car. Accomodation in El Rocío or Villamanrique.

Days 4: Doñana, Mérida and Trujillo

After breakfast we will leave Andalusia and head towards Extremadura. We'll keep our eyes open while crossing western Sierra Morena for raptors such as Black Vulture or Spanish Imperial Eagle. We will enjoy some birding in the area of Mérida before we get to Trujillo, where we will be based for the rest of the tour.

Day 5: Steppes of Extremadura

The vast flatlands between our hotel and Cáceres are the perfect place to find a rich steppe bird community. From pin-tailed sandgrouses to Little and Great Bustard, this important bird area will add great new birds to our trip. In the afternoon we will visit Los Barruecos, the biggest White Stork breeding colony on rocks. A great journey to enjoy bird and landscape photography.

Day 6: Monfragüe Natural Park

This can be the most impressive journey of the tour in terms of raptors. Monfragüe is a true paradise for Griffon Vulture, Monk Vulture and Spanish Imperial Eagle. We will visit impressive viewpoints on a scenic itinerary, including renown spots such as El Salto del Gitano, the castle of Monfragüe and La Portilla del Tiétar.

Day 7: Trujillo - Sevilla airport

Our last day of this tour and if flight schedules allow we will visit the mountains north of Sevilla. Transfer to Sevilla airport, where the tour ends.

This birdwatching tour will take us to the two most renown areas for birding in Spain. The tour will take place in spring to maximize bird sightings. Join these magnificent birding holidays with Álvaro clicking here!

Tour pace
This is a fairly relaxed tour: leisurely walking, occasionally over moderately rough terrain is the only physical requirement. On most days, we will have breakfast before heading out for the day. Lunch is often a leisurely picnic or tapas in a local bar en route to our next birding site. There are plenty of stops for coffee, tea or cold drinks. We usually return to the hotel at around 6.00 pm. Dinner is served late in Spain, generally not before 8:30pm. The walking is fairly easy and on good paths or tracks. Most of the bird watching is done within a short distance of our vehicle.
